Signs your AC needs repair
- Warm or barely cool air from the vents
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin
- Ice on the copper refrigerant line or indoor coil
- Short cycling, where the system turns on and off every few minutes
- Water pooling around the indoor unit
- Rising energy bills with no change in use
- Clicking, buzzing, banging or squealing noises
Common AC repairs and typical costs
| Repair | Typical US cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor replacement | $150–$400 | One of the most common failures, especially after heat waves |
| Contactor replacement | $150–$350 | Pitted contacts can stop the condenser from starting |
| Condenser fan motor | $350–$800 | Motor plus labor; the blade is sometimes replaced too |
| Clogged condensate drain | $100–$250 | Often fixed during a service call |
| Refrigerant leak search and repair | $300–$1,500+ | Depends on leak location and refrigerant type |
| Evaporator coil replacement | $1,000–$2,800 | Coil age and compatibility matter |
| Compressor replacement | $1,800–$3,500+ | On older systems, replacement is often the better value |
Most companies also charge a diagnostic or trip fee, typically $75–$150, and after-hours visits cost more. See the full cost guides.
What you can check yourself
- Confirm the thermostat is on Cool and set below room temperature.
- Replace a dirty air filter.
- Check the breakers and the outdoor disconnect.
- Make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris.
- If the coil or line is iced, switch to Fan only for a few hours to thaw it before calling.
Refrigerant: "topping off" isn't a fix
An AC doesn't use up refrigerant. If it's low, there's a leak. Repeatedly adding refrigerant without finding the leak costs more over time and harms the environment. Older R-22 systems are especially expensive to recharge, because R-22 production ended in 2020. Read more in our refrigerant guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an AC service call?
Most US contractors charge $75–$150 for a diagnostic visit, often credited toward the repair. Nights, weekends and holidays usually cost more.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC?
For small repairs, often yes. For a compressor, coil or major leak on a system that age, replacement is usually the better long-term value, especially if it uses R-22.
